Why Microsuction?

Many people suffer from ear canal blockages due to earwax. This may result in a temporary hearing loss, tinnitus, earache, a feeling of pressure in the ears, dizziness and itchy ears.

Here is how it works

High magnification vision tools and gentle suction are used to clean your ear canals. This is the same method used by Ear Nose & Throat Specialist doctors. Ear suction is carried out with a thin sterile single use suction tube, attached to a low-pressure suction machine that works like a gentle vacuum cleaner. Zoe may also use fine instruments, such as tiny forceps and hooks, to help remove wax.

FAQ’s

  • How do I know if I have earwax?

If your hearing is muffled or your ears feel blocked, I will examine your ears using an Otoscope , a special magnified light designed to look into ears clearly. If I find that your ears are actually clear of earwax, I will only charge you a consultation fee of £30. If I observe that your eardrum does not look healthy, I will advise you accordingly at this appointment as you may have middle ear fluid or an ear infection, which I will be able to see using Otoscopy.

  • Why is earwax microsuction removal the safest and most comfortable method?

Earwax microsuction removal has fast become the safest and most comfortable method of removing wax blockages from ear canals. Most GP surgeries no longer offer earwax syringing due to the possibility of perforating the eardrum due to excess pressure using this out dated water based method.

Microsuction is carried out using a high magnification vision tool and a gentle suction pump that acts as a mini vacuum cleaner. The pump is attached to a sterile single use suction tube, which clears the ear without the use of water.

  • How much do you charge for earwax removal?

  • Please refer to my pricing structure on the bookings page.

  • Do you do home visits and how much do you charge?

Yes, I charge minimum of £150 for all home visits even if upon arrival there is no wax requiring removal.

  • Are you able to remove earwax from children?

I carry out this procedure on co-operative children of all ages, provided the child is able to keep their head still during the procedure.

  • How long is a session?

Microsuction earwax removal takes approximately 30 minutes for two ears. This however depends on how easy it is to remove the wax. Sometimes earwax may be particularly hard and stuck to the ear canal wall. If this is the case I may put some sodium bicarbonate drops into your ear during your appointment.

On occasion, if your wax is too hard and cannot be removed on the day, I will reappoint you at a later date, following the use of ear drops recommended by me. This will soften the wax making it easier and more comfortable to remove on your return appointment.

  • Do I need prepare my ears before I attend a session?

No. The use of olive oil drops or spray, is only recommended for 2 days before the appointment for patients taking anticoagulant blood thinning medication. Otherwise it is actually NOT advisable to pre-soften wax for Microsuction.

NB: Never use drops in your ear if you have an infection or a perforation without medical advice.

  • Do you remove discharge/infection from the ears?

In such cases if I identify an infection, I will advise you to seek an appointment with your GP or advise on treatment.

  • Do you remove foreign bodies from the ear canal?

Yes if it is demed safe to do so.
